Have you ever heard of the Peanut Man? George Washington Carver was born the son of a slave in Missouri. George loved plants and wanted to learn everything about them. But because of the color of his skin, George wasn’t allowed to attend school. He left home, studied hard, and became the first black student to graduate from Iowa State Agricultural College. He became a teacher, showing students and farmers how to plant peanuts and other things to help keep the dirt healthy.
